5-PS3-1: Use models to describe that energy in animals’ food (used for body repair, growth, and motion and to maintain body warmth) was once energy from the sun.

In honor of Black History Month students will be research one scientist or inventor and complete the research template - in Google Classroom.

Investigation 2 - Part 2 - notes and vocabulary words
This week students will make scientific observations of their wheat seeds (some planted in light environments, others in dark environments). Students will measure the plant growth and make detailed observations of differences they see. This lab will wrap up our Investigation 2 - Parts 1 & 2. We will have a short-answer quiz on the major topics learned so far in this investigation. A study guide of all possible questions will be provided to the students (below). Any question may be asked of those on the study prep.
Monday: Finish Photosynthesis pamphlet / Make journal observations of seed growth over the break.
Tuesday: Measure and count wheat seed plants / Kahoot Review / Distribute Quiz Prep

Episode #7 - Green Mountain Boys HISTORICAL CONTENT: Trouble erupts in the New Hampshire when settlers are forced from their homes . Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold reluctantly join forces to capture Fort Ticonderoga in New York -- thereby expanding the war beyond New England.

SCIENCE FOR THE WEEK
5-PS3-1: Use models to describe that energy in animals’ food (used for body repair, growth, and motion and to maintain body warmth) was once energy from the sun.
5-LS1-1: Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water.
5-LS2-1:Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment.
This week students will begin the new unit titled, Living Systems (see above for details). Taking notes is very important. Students may use their digital notebooks (Google Classroom) or traditional notebooks. The important focus questions, main ideas and vocabulary words will always be posted here for quiz and test prep or should a student miss a day from school it is their responsibility to transfer the notes into their notebook. Students will finish reading - The French & Indian War - in Google Classroom
We will read this assignment in class together and we will submit it for a grade when we are finished.
We will discuss the causes, effects, and aftermath of the French & Indian War. This war is often described as the war that "made America". It was a turning point in colonial thinking toward the Crown of England and it gave rise to strong leadership such as George Washington and the Declaration of Independence.
Students will be viewing a documentary titled, "The War That Made America". There will be several in-class activities, journals, and reading passages. From here we will begin our journey into the American Revolution.

5-PS1-4. When two or more different substance are mixed, a new substance with different properties may be formed (chemical change).
- Student Interactive Workbook - Signs of Chemical Reactions . We will continue our lab investigations for this lesson. **Please note. SCIENCE FOR THE WEEK
This week students will begin our first science unit titled, "Space Systems: Stars and the Solar System".
We begin with NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) 5-ESS1-1: Support an argument that the apparent brightness of the sun and stars is due to their relative distance from Earth. In this lesson students will be introduced to the concept of scale using the Earth, Moon, and Sun.
They will apply their knowledge of scale to the distance and brightness of stars.
Our first lesson in this unit is titled, "How Big and Far Away are Objects in Space?" Students will need the following materials for this lesson:

This week students will begin learning about the specific jobs and occupations of early colonial times. Episode #2 - The Intolerable Acts HISTORICAL CONTENT: In response to the Boston Tea Party, the British Parliament passes the "Intolerable Acts," including "quartering", which allows British soldiers to take over a colonists home without their permission.
Episode #3 - United We Stand HISTORICAL CONTENT: At the First Continental Congress, representatives of each colony meet as a group for the first time. Sam and John Adams argue that the Intolerable Acts are not just a New England problem, they are an "American problem."

THIS WEEK WE WILL BEGIN INVESTIGATION #2 - Nutrient Systems
5-PS3: How is energy transferred and conserved.
5-LS1: How do organisms live, grow, respond to their environment and reproduce?
5-LS2: How and why do organisms interact with their environment and what are the effects if these interactions?
This week students will begin Investigation #2 (Part 1) - Nutrient Systems. We will start by using a microorganism (yeast) and testing in a science lab how to make the yeast active. Our focus question will be, "What does yeast need to break its dormancy (resting state)?". Our lab notes for this investigation are linked below.

SOCIAL STUDIES FOR THE WEEK
This week students will begin to learn about the events leading up to the American Revolution. We start the week by coloring in a BEFORE and AFTER map showing how the lands claimed by England and France changed after the French & Indian War. This map is important in understanding how England became the "owner" of North America.
Next, students will begin watching a series of animated videos called Liberty's Kids. These are award-winning animated videos showing the events of the American Revolution in sequence from the Boston Tea Party to the signing of the U.S. Constitution. Each week video worksheets and links to the video will be posted in Google Classroom. If a student misses a class, it is their responsibility to watch the video and complete the worksheet.

SCIENCE FOR THE WEEK
- This week in Science we begin with an introduction unit titled "8 Standards of Science and Engineering Practices": I would like students to write the eight practices in the front of their science notebook. If you are using a digital notebook you may copy & paste the image from the Science Resources page.
- The first practice is to "Ask Question to Define Problems". Please have the following vocabulary words written or typed in your notebook. Notebooks will be graded frequently.
- Phenomenon- an observable event that can be explained using scientific facts.
- Observation - recording what you see, hear, smell, taste, or feel.
- Evidence - a collection of facts that help prove a belief or suggestion
- Hypothesis - explaining what you think will happen based on evidence you have seen.

SCIENCE FOR THE WEEK
Our learning target is... I will be able to differentiate between physical and chemical changes.
5-PS1-4. When two or more different substance are mixed, a new substance with different properties may be formed (chemical change).
- Student Interactive Workbook - Chemical & Physical Changes- this is our interactive workbook for this lesson. It is posted in Google Classroom as an assignment. We will be completing the pages together during our science lessons. Students are to turn it in when it is fully completed.
- Student Interactive Workbook - Signs of Chemical Reactions . We will start this lesson after completing chemical and physical changes above. **Please note in this lesson we will combine different substances to look for evidence of a chemical change. We will use thermometers to measure temperature. At-home learners will need to use data collected from their peers in class. At home-learners are NOT required or expected to complete the lab. I do not want students to mix substances at home without their parents observation and approval.
SOCIAL STUDIES FOR THE WEEK
In class students will complete their apprenticeship application to apply for a colonial job of interest. The application will be a writing activity as they make up their education, special skill sets, and training needed for the job they choose. All material is posted in Google Classroom.

SOCIAL STUDIES FOR THE WEEK
This week we look at different regions of what is now known as the United States. Before European settlers colonized America many different nations of indigenous peoples lived throughout the continent. This map shows you the Native American regions.
Tuesday & Wednesday: In class we will watch a video titled, Comparing Lives of Native Peoples. While watching the video, students will complete the Notice, Wonder, Connect slide in Google Classroom. This slide will be submitted for a grade.
Thursday & Friday: We will begin to look more closely at the Northeast region, the region YOU live in and the region that was first colonized by European explorers and settlers. Why was the Northeast such an attractive place to live? We will read a Newsela article titled "Native Americans of the Northeast". - Google Classroom
