Investigation 2 - Part 2 - notes and vocabulary words
This week students will make scientific observations of their wheat seeds (some planted in light environments, others in dark environments). Students will measure the plant growth and make detailed observations of differences they see. This lab will wrap up our Investigation 2 - Parts 1 & 2. We will have a short-answer quiz on the major topics learned so far in this investigation. A study guide of all possible questions will be provided to the students (below). Any question may be asked of those on the study prep.

Minutemen -- citizens taking up arms -- fight the powerful, experienced Red Coats. They are outnumbered and outgunned but refuse to back down until shots are fired.
Episode #7 - Green Mountain Boys HISTORICAL CONTENT: Trouble erupts in the New Hampshire when settlers are forced from their homes . Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold reluctantly join forces to capture Fort Ticonderoga in New York -- thereby expanding the war beyond New England.

We will read this assignment in class together and we will submit it for a grade when we are finished.
We will discuss the causes, effects, and aftermath of the French & Indian War. This war is often described as the war that "made America". It was a turning point in colonial thinking toward the Crown of England and it gave rise to strong leadership such as George Washington and the Declaration of Independence.
Students will be viewing a documentary titled, "The War That Made America". There will be several in-class activities, journals, and reading passages. From here we will begin our journey into the American Revolution.

This week students will begin our first science unit titled, "Space Systems: Stars and the Solar System".
We begin with NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) 5-ESS1-1: Support an argument that the apparent brightness of the sun and stars is due to their relative distance from Earth. In this lesson students will be introduced to the concept of scale using the Earth, Moon, and Sun.

13 Colonies Timeline Quiz (TUESDAY) - Google Classroom
This week students will begin learning about the specific jobs and occupations of early colonial times. Students will use these trading cards to learn about the importance of each job, product, and service. A short video will also be viewed on colonial jobs. In class students will complete an apprenticeship application to apply for a colonial job of interest. The application will be a writing activity as they make up the education, special skill sets, and training needed for the job they choose. All material is posted in Google Classroom.

Episode #2 - The Intolerable Acts HISTORICAL CONTENT: In response to the Boston Tea Party, the British Parliament passes the "Intolerable Acts," including "quartering", which allows British soldiers to take over a colonists home without their permission.
Episode #3 - United We Stand HISTORICAL CONTENT: At the First Continental Congress, representatives of each colony meet as a group for the first time. Sam and John Adams argue that the Intolerable Acts are not just a New England problem, they are an "American problem."

This week students will begin Investigation #2 (Part 1) - Nutrient Systems. We will start by using a microorganism (yeast) and testing in a science lab how to make the yeast active. SOCIAL STUDIES FOR THE WEEK
This week students will begin to learn about the events leading up to the American Revolution. We start the week by coloring in a BEFORE and AFTER map showing how the lands claimed by England and France changed after the French & Indian War. This map is important in understanding how England became the "owner" of North America.
Next, students will begin watching a series of animated videos called Liberty's Kids. These are award-winning animated videos showing the events of the American Revolution in sequence from the Boston Tea Party to the signing of the U.S. Constitution. Each week video worksheets and links to the video will be posted in Google Classroom. If a student misses a class, it is their responsibility to watch the video and complete the worksheet.

SCIENCE FOR THE WEEK
This week we will finalize our interactive workbook "How Big and Far Away are Objects in Space?" Our objective this week is to complete all of the open-ended questions in the section titled "Analysis of Scale Models".
Our Learning Target is: 5-ESS1-1:Support an argument that the apparent brightness of the sun and stars is due to their distance from Earth.

SOCIAL STUDIES FOR THE WEEK
This week we look at different regions of what is now known as the United States. Before European settlers colonized America many different nations of indigenous peoples lived throughout the continent. This map shows you the Native American regions.
Tuesday & Wednesday: In class we will watch a video titled, Comparing Lives of Native Peoples. While watching the video, students will complete the Notice, Wonder, Connect slide in Google Classroom. This slide will be submitted for a grade.
Thursday & Friday: We will begin to look more closely at the Northeast region, the region YOU live in and the region that was first colonized by European explorers and settlers. Why was the Northeast such an attractive place to live? We will read a Newsela article titled "Native Americans of the Northeast". - Google Classroom
